Construction continues on the Whistler Conference Centre in December 1984. Work had begun on the Resort Centre by 1980 but stalled in 1982 in the midst of a major recession. The original plans included a swimming pool, ice rink, restaurant, squash courts and more, but many of the amenities were cut in order to finish the building. Work still hadn't resumed by May 1984 when three Whistler residents were asked by the Whistler Question if they thought construction would ever resume. You can find their answers on our Whistorical blog (link in bio). Photo: Whistler Question Collection, December 1984
The Great Snow Earth Water Race wasn't the only race that happened over the 1979 May long weekend - May Day Madness (the name given to the events that occurred over the weekend) included sack races on the Myrtle Philip School with multiple divisions! Whistler Question Collection, May 1979
Kids take part in the 1991 Whistler Children's Festival, organized by the Whistler Community Arts Council (today known as @artswhistler). T-shirt painting was a popular workshop for multiple years, but it was far from the only activity on offer. Participants could even sign up for a "Tummy Rumblers" cooking demo in the Fairmont Chateau Whistler kitchen, which included tasting the end result! The Whistler Children's Festival is back for its 40th festival over this weekend and next - be sure to check out the free activities offered along Whistler's Cultural Connector, including with the Whistler Museum!
