In the 1980s the Whistler Question began posing a question to three to six people and publishing their responses under “Whistler’s Answers” (not to be confused with the Whistler Answer). Each week, we’ll be sharing one question and the answers given back in 1983. Please note, all names/answers/occupations/neighbourhoods represent information given to the Question at the time of publishing and do not necessarily reflect the person today.
Some context for this week’s question: The Whistler Golf Course opened 18-holes on June 15, 1983. Though there had previously been a smaller course in the area, plans to expand the golf course were delayed by the recession. Find out more about Whistler’s golf course development here.
Question: What do you think of Whistler’s golf course?
Brad Ewart – Freelance Sports Writer – Burnaby, BC
I thoroughly enjoyed my round. This course really forces you to think. I would say it’s not a championship course but it wasn’t meant to be. It rewards a good shot and penalizes a bad one. The greens are superb – they are the best part.
Dave Duddy – Greensman, Whistler Golf Course – White Gold
It’s a challenging course if you hit straight. The fairways are tight and the greens are coming along well – really smoothing out. We’ve got a few problems on holes two and three and 15 and 16, but they’ll come. The best thing about this is to see people using the course. That’s what’s made all our work worthwhile.
Howard Reed – Telephone Co. Staff – Seattle, Washington
That course is fantastic for only being a year old. It has been beautifully maintained and is really challenging. There were a few bare spots and it was a little ragged on the 16th hole but when all that matures this course will be out of this world.
