Whistler’s Answers: September 1, 1983

In the 1980s the Whistler Question began posing a question to three to six people and publishing their responses under “Whistler’s Answers” (not to be confused with the Whistler Answer).  Each week, we’ll be sharing one question and the answers given back in 1983.  Please note, all names/answers/occupations/neighbourhoods represent information given to the Question at the time of publishing and do not necessarily reflect the person today.

Some context for this week’s question: In the early 1980s, Whistler was still trying to position itself as a summer resort as well as a winter resort. Summers were much slower than winters, though there were efforts made to promote activities already present (such as hiking, fishing, biking and more) and to create more events and facilities to attract visitors to the area.

Question: What added facility do you think Whistler needs to attract more summer visitors?

Joe Nonen – Manufacturer – Vancouver

We found a lack of information. There may be things going on, but we haven’t seen them. There should be information boards. I would ask, where do you hike, where do they windsurf? You can have a million things going on, but if no one knows about them they might as well not happen.

Norma Warm – Housewife – Chilliwack

Get your camping in. We’re not really interested in golf. A few casinos would certainly smarten up the place quickly. This is our first time here and it’s way above expectations. The quietness and cleanness hits you right away. The most important thing is camping.

Jef Brown – Manager, Image Makers – Alpine Meadows

The waterslide’s a good idea. We also need some sort of riding trail development. We need a campground here as well. A lot of people don’t realize you can get beer here on Sundays. If that was publicized, people would come here, maybe go hiking, and be able to have a beer afterwards.
